I use heavy cotton canvas or birch panels for the long-term strength of the piece. While not as critical for acrylic (vs. oils) all of my surfaces are primed a minimum of 2-3 times with Golden or Holbein gesso to provide a protective barrier between the paint and the surface. I use professional grade Golden Acrylic Paints with high pigment loads, taking care not to use more than a 1:1 mixture of water to paint to maintain proper adhesion. Per the Smithsonian Museum, I do not yet use varnish. Please see this link for an explanation and care of acrylic paintings: https://www.si.edu/mci/english/learn_more/taking_care/acrylic_paintings.html
